Sick puppy forgotten in the back of the shelter

Rome, GA - It is difficult to read about the dogs that have been neglected, abused and thrown away. It is hard to imagine the type of person that is able to treat man's best friend so cruelly.

But read on you do, champions for the literal underdogs. It is the passionate advocates for the voiceless that bouy our belief that humanity is not dead.

It is a passionate animal lover that stepped up to save a special, sick puppy from a Georgia animal shelter - a person that did not turn away from his obvious pain and misery.

Meet Cookie - a puppy that wound up at the Floyd Shelter in Georgia. How Cookie came to be here - no one knows. More than likely, another throw away puppy - not planned - not wanted.

But Cookie's story goes beyond being thrown away by his so-called owner. Cookie was first let down by his owner. He was then let down by a rescue that claimed to be coming to take him away from the high kill shelter, but they did not show up. He was further let down by the shelter itself.

A rescue minded individual discovered Cookie in a back room of the shelter. The puppy was not posted anywhere - no one knew that the young, sick dog was even alive.

Had this person not stumbled upon the puppy, he would have died - alone, scared, sick...died without hope, love or compassion. The person that discovered Cookie was heart-broken. The puppy sat in a corner, head down, face turned away - dejected...

Unable to turn her back on the pitiful pup, the woman went to work, networking for the sick dog. Her networking paid off. A woman that works to save dogs, one life at a time, stepped up to pull Cookie from the shelter.

Today, Cookie was released from the shelter and he went directly to the vet. The woman that pulled him from the shelter noted that he is suffering from perhaps the worst case of mange that she has ever seen - he is covered in raw, bloody wounds from his face to his belly.

Despite his obvious pain, Cookie greeted his rescuer with a wagging tail - evidence of his happiness to be out of the frightening shelter and into the arms of love and care.

Cookie has a long road ahead of him, but he is now backed by compassionate individuals that will ensure that he gets what he needs to survive and thrive.

Anyone interested in donating towards Cookie's care can do so directly to his vet clinic, please be sure to indicate that the funds are for Cookie, the rescued puppy. The rescuer's name is Toni Diamond:

Mount Berry Animal Hospital, 2965 Martha Berry Hwy, Rome, Ga 30165, 706-232-0364

Thank you for saving him. This made me cry. Everyday I just dont understand how people can treat these dogs that give you nothing but unconditional love so horribly.
I hope that sweet cookie will spend the rest of his life with love love love!

Thank God for kind, compassionate people. Cookie looks to me like a pit bull mix....that could be the reason for his so-called non-existence in the mind of the shelter. :(

Another story of neglect and abuse at Rome Floyd County. These storys are plentyfull and easy to find. WHEN is someone going to do something about this horrid shelter and Jason Broome ????

  • laila 1 year ago

who is jason broome? does he run the shelter? if u wanna call it that.

  • laila 1 year ago

toni is an angel sent from above to save cookie. ive never cried so hard and so long over a story. i still would love to try to get this aired on tv to shut this place down. but the main thing cookie is safe. one dog at a time. wonder if the vet will take a donation over the phone for cookies medical bill. or would i have to send a check to them.

  • Ashley 1 year ago

This is not the first time this happened and it will certainly will not be the last. It is yet again another case of abuse and neglect at Floyd County Animal Control. I wonder if Mr. Blaine Williams and Kevin Poe are going to stand behind Jason Broome now? This shelter needs a major overhall and reorganization. The animals deserve better than to be abused and neglected. I hope everyone bands together and demand that things change.

what a heart breaking story. this is not the first time and will not be the last time a "rescue" does not show up, it is not the first time Rome GA Floyd has mistreated animals in there care. I wonder how many days Cookie went without food or water at the shelter since they discarded him to a life of exile in the back. Praise people like Toni who care and go the extra mile for fur babies like Cookie.

maria, I really don't think they deliberately did this. Again, he would have been gassed right off if they had known about him. I think someone dropped him off, or he may have snuck in, and he just went to the corner and hid. That's what he was doing, he was hiding, with his face to the wall. He did not know he was in view. If he can't see you he is "hiding". he no doubt did not eat or get water, but again, that saved his life. This cookie pup has a special someone watching over him from above.

  • Suzie Perlstein 1 year ago

Horrible as it is, being "forgotten" probably saved his life. Had they seen him he would have been gassed right away. This shelter just does not have the $ to keep sick animals. Thanks Toni, and the person who contacted you. We humans are blessed to be your friend.

What a great Christmas present to both Toni and Cookie

  • Ashley 1 year ago

I did not think that this shelter gassed animals anymore. Are they giving out false information? And Suzie this shelter did deliberately did this. This is not the first time this has happened and I am sure it will not be the last if people do not stand up and do something about it.

How in God's name can a shelter who's job it is to protect & care for EVERY animal that is brought to them, forget about a puppy that they have taken in. God bless the woman that stepped in and rescued the poor pup.

This story broke my heart, too - but as someone said, thank God for Toni! I would be interested to know how she 'networked' to find someone to take Cookie and save him . . . I have several cats I have taken in and 'adopted' because they needed help, but there is a limit and I am not prepared to accept dogs (however, we have had several of those, too, all rescues!). Our local shelter does not accept 'strays' (hate that word!) and I still don't know what they mean by that. In the past I have called a young man I knew helped with homeless dogs, but have not been able to contact him lately - I'm always looking for resources!!

i pledge to any here who believe in God passionately to pray for The Rescuer of Cookie. With all people in the world like that there would be no pain or hunger, but joy and health. It is just if God spreads His people all round the world to make it a bit better place.

Thank you for all you do, Peacekeepers. Thank you you are.

    "Heal the world,
    Make it a better place,
For you and for me and the entire humane race,
    There are people dying,
If you care enough for the living,
Make a better place for you and for me..."

One puppy saved, well done Toni. We need HEAPS of people to care about the HUNDREDS of cruelty cases that are out there EVERY DAY !!! Dogs and cats in Bali are roaming the streets mange ridden and starving, as are many, many animals that need your help, love , and compassion/

Thank you to the woman who discovered this puppy in the shelter in the first place and didn't walk away, but networked him!!!! She deserves equal thanks and gratitude. If not for her this puppy would surely have died a slow, agonizing death. And thank you Toni for taking him under your wing.

Precious Cookie, I am so sorry that prior to your angel Toni finding you, humans let you down. I realize that your story happened a year ago and i hope that you are now safe and sound with a loving forever family, living a positive and healthy life. <3
