Miami, FL - German shepherds notoriously falter in the stressful environment of an animal control facility.
Falter to the point of either being deemed aggressive, or shutting down and becoming "unadoptable". The tragic side effect being the untimely, unnecessary killing of such dogs by animal care employees.
Though far too many incredible dogs die this way, there are special stories of hope.
Stories like Chip and Xena's - two gorgeous shepherds recently saved from a high kill facility in Florida.
Elissa Powers, founder of SHARE (Shepherd Help and Rescue Efforts) had been watching one incarcerated German shepherd to see if he would be adopted from the facility in time.
As is often the case, help did not arrive for the beautiful dog.
On his last day, Chip was saved by Powers - but she discovered that he was not alone there.
He had been dropped off at the shelter with his littermate - a dog named Xena.
Xena was mourning her brother - when he was removed from his kennel, Xena began crying - perhaps intuitively knowing that should would not see him again.
When Powers learned of the sibling, she could not leave her behind - Xena was pulled from the facility - saved from certain death as well.
Powers could see the dogs' love for one another - being reunited brought the dogs obvious joy.
In light of their strong bond, Powers was determined to see the dogs find an adopter who was willing to take them both in.
Not an easy task for large breed dogs.
But her determination eventually paid off - those adopters who were not willing to take both dogs were bypassed.
Finally, that special adopter was found - a couple actually - married for 40 years.
The pair drove four hours to meet Chip and Xena and, according to Powers, it was love at first sight.
Though boarding the two shepherds had cost the rescue organizations hundreds of dollars each month, the wait for that perfect adopter was worth it.
Chip and Xena are now together forever with their special guardians - thanks to a rescue organization with the determination to do what was right.
