SI girls prevail over Pinewood, SI boys fall in Sand Dune Classic title games

The Pinewood Panthers gave the host St. Ignatius Wildcats a tough test Saturday evening. However, the Panthers three point shots stopped falling in the fourth quarter as the host Wildcats pulled away for a 59-48 win to claim the 2013 Sand Dune Classic girls championship.

St. Ignatius jumped to a 6-0 lead to start the game before Pinewood responded with it's own 8-0 run. From there, the Wildcats dominated as they held a 31-22 halftime lead. Pinewood clawed back to trial 41-37 after the third quarter and briefly took the lead in the fourth quarter before St. Ignatius rallied and sealed the deal. With the win, St. Ignatius improved to 8-0 overall. Pinewood dropped to 10-1 overall.

St. Joseph-Norte Dame Pilots 52 - St. Ignatius Wildcats 50

In the boys championship game, St. Joseph-Norte Dame's 6'7" Temidayo Yussuf rebound his own missed free throw and made a layup with 3.5 seconds left to send the Pilots to a 52-50 win over the host St. Ignatius Wildcats. Yussuf had just scored the game tying basket with 8.5 seconds left while getting fouled.

The loss was a tough one for St. Ignatius. The Wildcats had went on a 5-0 run to take a 50-46 lead with 2:30 left. However, the Pilots responded with their own 6-0 run to end the game and claim the championship title. The win improves St. Joseph-Norte Dame's record to 8-3 overall. St. Ignatius drops to 6-2 overall.
