Shrek , the animated movie, brought a fresh view to fairy tales like Beauty and the Beast and the Swan Princess, replete with famous characters and humor. For the Broadway tour, Shrek the Musical is reworked to incorporate 19 new songs. The musical is significantly longer than the movie.
Even though the Shrek movies now have four feature films, the original is still my favorite and, if you can believe it, was released over ten years ago. The movie features an ogre, Shrek, who has given up on being able to make friends and being treated fairly. In his quest for isolation, he discovers Princess Fiona and Donkey. Together they help Shrek shake off his misanthropy.
How will the staged performance incorporate the key characters? The movie worked so well because the fairy tale and outrageous characters really came to life with the computer animation. I’ve done a bit of exploring and the musical does not leave any main character out, not even Dragon. I’m looking forward to checking out how Shrek is adapted to for the Palace’s stage.
The show appears at the Palace Theater in Waterbury on February 10th and 11th with show times at 8 pm both evenings and a 2 pm show on Saturday.
