Local shows this week:
Thursday the cinqo de Mayo: Providence-based folk duo Brown Bird is at Porter Belly's Pub in Brighton. Their sound has been described as "harmonized voices, haunting lyrics and diverse rhythm and instrumentation, which surges in waves that often swell into high-spirited, foot-stomping madness." They texture their harmonies and compelling art-folk tunes with various traditional instruments, including banjo, fiddle and cello. Porter Belly's is at 338 Washington Street, Brighton, MA. 8 PM doors.
Friday: The Rosebud Bar in Davis Square has a good multi-band bill, headlined by the manic kazooers the Sprained Ankles. Joining the excitable Ankles are Jay Allen and the Archcriminals, Popgun, and Battlegreen. 9PM, 21+, $5
Saturday: Tired of the usual night out in the usual venues? Check out Al Janik's Plastik Cheez Band's annual Polka party at the Polish American club in Cambridge. A cavalcade of local rockers play polka standards, polka originals, and unexpected covers (can a Wire song be played as a polka? Maybe you'll find out.) For $10 you can join the crowd, ranging from babies to senior citizens, for a party of polka, dancing, and a feast of traditional polish food.
