Showing your experience effectively on your resume

Phoenix has a diverse workforce with tenure and experience ranging from recent graduates to formerly retired personnel who are re-entering the market with the current economy.  The question about ‘how long should my resume be’ is an individual decision.  Here are some things to consider:

  • People reading your resume may have other jobs too.  Depending on the industry and size of company you are applying to, the person reading your resume may be the HR person for the organization.  If that is the case, they could be balancing other aspects of personnel including benefits, company policies, and training.  They may not have time to read beyond your first page, so make it count.
  • Is the position going to have several applicants?  Evaluate whether the jobs you are applying for will have hundreds or even thousands of applicants.  If the company is large and using a job search engine to recruit from, then an applicant tracking system will most likely see your resume first.  The first page of your resume will need to have a significant number of key words from the job description to make it to a human’s hands.
  • What information on your resume separates you from the competition?  Does the position require certain education or training that you have?  Are their language or technological skills that make you a superior candidate?  Make sure this information is included in content as early in your resume as possible.

Whether your resume is being evaluated by a third party recruiter or a direct employee of the company, showing the skills that are most relevant to your potential success in the organization on the first page of your resume will be a key to moving forward in the interview process.
