Summer temperatures continue in the triple digits for Phoenix job seekers, so how should candidates show prospective employers that they are keeping their cool during career fairs? Even though it may be tempting to skip traditional items like pantyhose for women and ties for men, summer temperatures are not an excuse to appear less professional or informal at a career fair event.
1. Wear a suit or equally professional clothes. Suits will always be preferred by employers as appropriate for a career event. They show you are taking the process seriously and have come to talk about the value you can provide the company. Even if the recruiters are dressed less formally, you shouldn’t do that until you get the job.
2. Remove anything that distracts from what you are saying. The goal for candidates at a career event is to interest the recruiter to want to schedule a longer period of time to talk to them about your skills. If you are wearing a tie or blouse that is overly patterned or bright, the recruiter could be distracted and not pay attention to what you are saying.
3. Plan ahead and give yourself time to cool off. The best way to avoid looking like you were sitting by the pool before you walked into the career fair is to get to the location early. Take off your jacket and tie for the ride and arrive at least 15 minutes early to put yourself together in the car. If the venue is a hotel, you can also carry your jacket into the lobby and head to the restroom to get prepared.
