Show Spotlight: Dum Dum Girls to bring some indie girl power to Black Cat in DC

The venue Black Cat in DC always features some of the most diverse acts and shows and this week is no different with many great artists playing the venue. Artists like Givers, Zola Jesus, Wild Flag and The Damned will all be playing the venue this week. But this week’s show spotlight focuses on the up and coming artist Dum Dum Girls who will play Black Cat this Saturday.

The amazing indie band Dum Dum Girls is made up of four extremely talented women from California and formed in 2008. Their sound is very hard to describe and borders on a mix of country, punk and 60s pop garage rock. The group themselves have cited the eclectic mix of The Ronettes, Ramones, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Patti Smith and Mazzy Star among their major influences. Lead vocalist Dee-Dee has also said in the past she has been inspired by such female artists as Grace Slick, Siouxsie Sioux, Billie Holiday, Hope Sandoval, Nico, Madonna and Courtney Love. Their unique name even has a interesting musical origins because Dum Dum Girls was inspired by both The Vaselines album Dum Dum and music legend Iggy Pop’s song “Dum Dum Boys” Looking at the list of diverse inspirations and musical influences cited by the band clearly explains the unmistakable sound the band has managed to produce and cultivate.

The band who all go by one name aliases consists of Dee-Dee (vocals, guitar), Jules (guitar, vocals), Bambi (bass, vocals) and Sandy (drums, vocals). The band gained some recognition after touring with artists like Vampire Weekend and Beach House and recently the band received attention after “Coming Down” was played on the new CW show Secret Circle. For a band who has only been together for three years they have already released two EPs and two CDs including their 2010 CD I Will Be. But it’s their most recent CD called Only In Dreams with its gorgeous pop hooks and hauntingly beautiful and memorable songs that could possibly make this band a household name. On two of the standout tracks on the CD “Bedroom Eyes” and “Coming Down” it is as if the new Chrissie Hynde or Hope Sandoval has been discovered in lead vocalist Dee-Dee.

Dum Dum Girls are definitely one to watch and a band that is just as remarkable live as on CD. If proof is needed on how good they sound live just listen to this live performance of one of their new songs “Teardrops On My Pillow” from a recent stop at the XM/Sirius studios: http://youtu.be/uAPQRVaCiDk  Also to hear a few more of their songs click on the YouTube links at the end of the article to hear six songs from the band.
