There is a notorious cliché that expounds this illusory belief that “nice guys finish last”. Whoever came up with this absurd avowal was wrongfully stated. According to the life of a Christian, modesty and humility towards one another is essential to sustain in one’s life. Jesus taught us to love one another as one would love one’s self. Therefore, we all must follow in this teaching and do good unto one another despite any cost.
Doing good is such a vague interpretation that man incessantly misunderstands. Loving each other and doing good unto others is a lot simpler than how people make it out to be. Love others by showing them kindness and understanding. Do good to others by being courteous and respectful.
That mere dissipation of the Golden Rule that we are all taught in primary school is not acknowledged in adulthood. Where do you think that rule came from? Treat others in the way you want to be treated. This statement was obviously derived with some religious connoted thought behind it. It sounds awfully similar to what Jesus was trying to tell us. Love your enemies as yourself. Do you feel a sense of déjà vu?
Aside from the semantic technicalities, focus back on the idea that as Christians, we must understand it to be a lifestyle. As Followers of Christ, we all must see our brothers in the image of our Lord Jesus. This implies that we all must be kind and gentle towards them.
Being Christian means that there will be many who will want to do you harm. Do not allow these people to keep you from being decent to them. Continue as you are but keep your distance. Be good to your enemies but also do not linger in their presence for too long. Loving our enemies does not necessarily imply befriending them. It is better to love from a distance than to befriend the darkness. Sometimes, by getting too close to those who wish you harm, you may lose yourself in the process.
You must never expect anything from those who you are good to. If you only do good to those who do good to you, what have you gained? What is the purpose of only giving good to those who reciprocate it back to you? That is not the attitude to have. Instead, go in knowing you will receive nothing. It is better to underestimate and be pleasantly surprised than to overestimate and be disappointed.
Trust in our Lord. He has so much love and compassion for us. It should be in our very nature to do likewise for our brother despite who our brother may be or what he may say. Never allow evil to discourage your love towards humanity but allow it strengthen your trust in the Lord. Never allow evil to win these silly battles against you. Do not allow your love and compassion to vanish.
Use the tears we have for our Lord during His Passion to give us strength. Remember all that Jesus did for us and use that as your fuel to do good to others. In this life, you will encounter much evil. It will only worsen. This is not the time to lose faith but to grow in it.
Pray to God and make sure it is a constant occurrence. If life is short, do not squander the time you have left. Instead, give your whole self to God. Allow Him to lead your way. We all must follow according to God’s Will and not our own.
