The 12th Annual Americana Awards and Honors was held on Sept. 18 at Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium and broadcast live on AXS TV. The Awards show was a showcase for the past, present, and future of Americana music with the awards being dominated by a duo that first began working together 40 years ago and a one of the hottest young acts in Americana today.
There isn't much higher Americana royalty than Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell. The duo began collaborating over 4 decades ago and have separately become two of the best selling trailblazers in Americana. So it's no surprise that their 2013 collaboration "Old Yellow Moon" garnered a pair of Americana Awards. Crowell and Harris took home the prizes for Album of the Year and Duo/Group of the Year.
Also taking home two awards was white hot husband and wife duo Shovels & Rope. Their song "Birmingham" of their 2012 album "O' Be Joyful" won Song of the Year and the pair also took home honors for Emerging Artist of the Year.
The Instrumentalist of the Year Award went to Larry Campbell. Campbell is best known for his stint in Bob Dylan's band but has also collaborated with the likes of Levon Helm and Phil Lesh as well.
The Artist of the Year Award went to Dwight Yoakam. Yoakam has been a major crossover success throughout his career but his "3 Pears" proves that he has always been an Americana artist.
Receiving Lifetime Achievement Awards were Hank Williams, accepted by his granddaughter Holly, Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, New Orleans legend Dr. John, Arhoolie Records executive Chris Strachwitz, new Grand Ole Opry members "Old Crow Medicine Show", rockabilly instrumentalist Duane Eddy, and free speech champion and multi-platinum artist Stephen Stills.
But no Americana Awards show would be complete without the great performances and this year's was not short on them. Among the highlights were JD McPherson's blistering "North Side Gal", The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach joining Dr. John, and Stephen Stills joining Buffalo Springfield bandmate Richie Furay and Kenny Wayne Shepherd for a performance of "For What It's Worth."
Closing out the show was a whole stage full of performers and presenters including Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller, and The Civil Wars' Joy Williams joining forces for "Leaving Louisiana."
