Shovel Knight coming to Nintendo consoles.

Just one week and over $43,000 into its Kickstarter fund, indie developer Yacht Club Games has made a surprise announcement concerning its upcoming 8-bit platformer Shovel Knight; In addition to PC, the game is now also being developed for Wii U and 3DS.

Those who pledge $15 or more to the game's development will be able to receive the additional choice of Wii U or 3DS versions of the game if the project is fully funded. Yacht Club apologizes that $10 donors won't have the option to receive their copy on a Nintendo system, citing extra costs including dev kit acquisition, certification, and (most prominently) paying Nintendo for each download code it distributes.

This may not be the end of Shovel Knight's multiplatform aspirations, though. Nintendo systems aren't the only ones that backers have requested a port of the game for, and Yacht Club seems to be insistent that this won't be the only such announcement for their new title:

"We are so completely excited to be developing for Nintendo," Yacht Club said, "Because as an 8-bit style game, Nintendo is where Shovel Knight belongs. Now our heritage platform is secured. What platform could be next!?!?"
