It is time to think and take action if you are considering working during the holiday season and taking advantage of many retail stores that are hiring extra help during this time of the year.
According to a report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, retail holiday hiring is off to its strongest start in years.
Should your teen get a holiday job? For many reasons, outside of making extra money, the answer should be yes. Learning about responsibility and accountability in your teen years can help them in their future. Taking your job seriously, being on time, learning people skills and creating your own sense of self-worth is part of emotional growth for a bright future.
Whether your teen is looking for employment or volunteer work over the holidays, one thing is certain, when you give of yourself, you not only benefit others you gain gratification. Giving to others is truly a gift to yourself.
With today's economy many teenagers will be up against many adults also looking for extra income and will be applying for these same jobs. As with adults, teens need to be diligent and determined. Knowing your community, calling on friends and family for references and resources can help.
Do you see a Christmas tree stand going up on a local corner? This can be a great job for teens and usually there are tips involved too. Restaurants and retail are your biggest employers during the holiday times. Get online, many of them have you fill out online applications, then take the extra step and go and visit the store manager.
What about your local movie theater? Many will put on extra staff while school is out and the matinee's increase.
For those teenagers that are applying to colleges (which hopefully are all of you), don't forget your community service hours! Check into your local nursing homes, Humane Society and even your YMCA.
