Let's face it, many western men who travel to Thailand are looking for a Thai girlfriend or wife. But, when they arrive in the country, feeling lost and a bit confused, signing up with a Thai dating agency seems like the right direction to go in. Believe me, it's not. In fact, many western men will tell you the exact same thing.
Dating Agencies are Expensive - While Thailand is a relatively cheap country, dating agencies in Thailand are not. With starting prices of $1,500, signing up with a dating agency in Bangkok, Pattaya or Chiang Mai and meeting a few Thai women can lead to you spending $3,000 or more.
Now, in a country populated with millions of Thai women, many of whom are looking for western boyfriends or husbands, why on earth would you pay a dating agency to do what you can do yourself?
Women Who Sign Up are Often Gold Diggers - Whether it's a stereotype or not, it's reported by western guy after western guy -- many Thai women who sign up at dating agencies are gold diggers. They've been in the dating game for a while and the only reason they're in it is for money. If you look like you have far more money than the average Thai guy, some of these ladies are going to attach themselves to you at the hip and never let go. Not until all the cash is gone, that is. Then they'll move away from you faster than a stampeding elephant.
Thai women you meet in coffee shops, stores, on the sky train, at restaurants, in bookstores, or anywhere else an everyday "good Thai girl" would go, are often interested in speaking to western men for an opportunity to improve their English skills, as well as to maybe meet a potential boyfriend. Sure, you may find some gold diggers out in the real world too, but just not in the massive numbers you'll find at a Thai dating agency.
Meeting Women in Thailand is Easy - Most Thai women are friendly, sweet, and love to have fun. If you're at all friendly and like to talk, many Thai women will enjoy talking to you -- and some are truly lovely.
Strike up a conversation in a cafe or a restaurant, a bookstore or at the supermarket. At first, you might find yourself faced with lots of giggles and a truly shy girl but, in many cases, if she likes you she won't let you get away too fast.
Finally, if you're still not convinced signing up with a Thai dating agency is the wrong thing to do, look for a documentary series called "Weird Weekends", filmed by a British journalist, Louis Theroux," who did an expose on Thai dating agencies.
