It seems we are coming to the end of the "dog day's of summer," but our Los Angeles sun can be pretty unrelenting. Is your pup protected?
The idea of sunscreen for dogs is pretty…hmmm…overlooked. It came to mind when I was walking my black standard poodle with a friend and he said "My dog has to go in now, he's getting sunburned."
Can dogs get sunburned? Sure. Get this: 1 in 4 dogs die of cancer. That's according to the Morris Animal Foundation. Cancer is the number one cause of death in dogs over the age of 2, taking the lives of almost half of all dogs over the age of 10. And skin cancer is the most common kind of cancer, occurring most often in dogs aged 6 to 14 years. We want to be outdoors with our dogs, so what's a good option?
94% of veterinarian dermatologists recommend the use of sunscreen on pets. Pet sunscreen? What a great idea for horses and dogs! Who knew? But don't go grabbing the Banana Boat just yet…

What dogs are at risk? Well, all of them, but light colored, light skinned, shaved and dogs with thin fur have a higher risk of developing skin cancer. Fur does help, but the nose, ears, mouth, and belly are all exposed.
Most importantly, it's important to regularly check your dog's skin for any abnormalities and keep pets indoors and out of the sun when the sun's rays are the strongest, between the hours of 10am and 4pm.
The first time I sprayed my dog with Epi-Pet sunscreen, she sneezed a few times. I like to spray a bit out into my hand and apply it manually. It says right on the directions you can apply it to your dog's nose, face on on outside and inside flaps of ears. She likes it. Now I say to my pup, "Time to put your sunscreen on" and she stands nicely for me…cuz she KNOWS she is going to go outside.
Epi-Pet Sun Protector Sunscreen is $17.95 for a 4 oz. can. Epi-Pet has other great products for itchy, flaky skin like pet skin enrichment sprays, and shampoos. LUCKY DOG, save 10% with their end of summer sale now until Saturday, September 28th.
It's always an adventure walking my dog (SEE SLIDESHOW). While out and about one afternoon, we passed an old man sitting in his lawn chair. He sees us and says, "Excuse me, Miss." (ALWAYS better than being called a Ma'am, but I thought to myself, "oh NOW what, is he going to yell at me for my dog sniffing around his yard, does he want to make sure I have a poopie bag?" He gets me aside and tells me this:
"We can learn alot from our dogs."
And he hands me a slip of paper from the American Human Society and Making Wellness Fun Newsletter:
"Things We Can Learn From A Dog"
