Should you jailbreak your iPhone?

The new iPhone 3GS

For those new to the iPhone or iPod Touch, you might wonder if it is worth the bother to jailbreak your iPhone. While there isn't currently a way to jailbreak the new iPhone 3GS, the dev team recently updated their software, allowing it to jailbreak the iPhone 3.0 OS.

One of the main reasons for jailbreaking an iPhone or iPod Touch is to get access to apps that are banned from the app store. And there's some pretty interesting apps out there like MxTube that allows you to save YouTube videos so you can watch them later.

For iPhone users, another big draw to jailbreaking is the ability to unlock the phone using ultrasn0w. This is for those that really want to get out from under AT&T's thumb.

Third-party apps will also let you tether your iPhone or even capture video without the iPhone 3GS.

But unless you have a specific reason to do so -- like there is an app that you simply must have that is banned from the Apple app store -- I wouldn't really recommend it. In fact, even if you really want one of those apps, I'd think twice about it unless you consider yourself an expert iPhone user.

Let's face it, jailbreaking the iPhone opens the door to malware and viruses. Admittedly, the risk is pretty low right now compared to downloading programs for your PC, but as the popularity of the iPhone increases -- and as the popularity of jailbreaking the iPhone increases -- it will become a bigger and bigger target.

Saving YouTube vids? So that is basically illegal because it breaks the contract under which content is provided by contributors.

Why don't you simply spell out the truth that jailbreaking exists so some people can krack games (which is stealing in any other context) to the detriment of the poor mugs who are not so savvy and just wanna be cool get hit by viruses and malware.

jailrbeaking was never intended to be used as something to steal games. In fact if you add the Hackulo.us repo to cydia, it warns you that the company shares illegal content.
The iPhone can do so much more than apple allows, that was the purpose of jailbreaking it. I still purchase apps on my phone and it is jailbroken. I like to change my settings, Have a real flashlight, and capture video . Anyone who bought the iPhone now has the right to do whatever they want to it. If someone posted a video to you tube, they should be aware its not that hard to download it,not just on the iPhone but by 20 firefox plugins and stand alone software as well. Jailbreaking is not illegal, in fact it is the whole reason you have a real app store to begin with. Remember the Band app. Guess where he developed that,Installer. I had his original app on 1.1.2. I played with it before the 3g was even announced. The iphone is where it is today because of jailbreakers. Visit iTechFeed for more info.
