Cloud computing is good for the environment.
A recent Microsoft study (http://bit.ly/i27XD3) bears out what environmentally-conscious companies have hoped for all along: cloud computing has the potential to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions by 30 percent or more.
While the accompanying article digs deep into the data center usage of large corporations and economies of scale, the basic gist of the article is that small companies can realize energy savings by going to the cloud. This is essentially a reduction in the number of physical computers in a small business.
This study needs to be taken with a rather large grain of Microsoft salt. Like many studies that show how a particular company’s products and/or services can benefit humanity, it’s a study that was commissioned by Microsoft themselves.
But a good take away is that a small firm probably could see cost savings in electricity, equipment and possibly personnel by moving some or all operations to the cloud.
