Should we be concerned about drones?

Drones are invading the skies, and they’re the future of multiple industries, including the military, conservation and the private sector. We should certainly be excited. Drones, after all, are affordable, reduce the need for military personnel and boast pinpoint accuracy. A major concern, however, is that drone warfare often causes collateral damage in civilian lives and property.

You may soon be able to use Amazon Prime Air service. The goal of Amazon’s new delivery system is to get packages into customers’ hands in 30 minutes or less using unmanned aerial vehicles. The basic technology is already here. Drones would be able to deliver to homes, apartment buildings, commercial properties, rural areas, developing countries and dense areas. Drone delivery would be beneficial to the environment, and it would reduce overconsumption. There are serious potential privacy concerns that must be taken into consideration, however. Senator Rand Paul thinks that drone surveillance is a major issue.

The FAA is developing regulations for the testing and licensing of commercial drones by 2015, and the UPS and FedEx are already researching delivery drones.

How do you feel about drones and drone delivery? Do you think the benefits outweigh the potential privacy concerns? Please share in the comments, and remember to take a look at the infographic here to learn more!
