Should the American flag be banned in America?

On May 6, Fox News started an unofficial poll on their website. The poll was created following the California incident in which several high school students who were wearing shirts displaying the U.S. flag were sent home from school after refusing to turn their shirts inside out. The poll question: Should the American flag be banned in America? The possible answers include:

  • No. This is a lame decision. Teach the kids what the flag means, instead of banning it.
  • Yes. The safety of students comes first.
  • Not sure, but of all things to ban, the American flag would seem the least 'incendiary.'
  • Other (post a comment)

As of yesterday, over 1.1 million votes had been cast. At that time, 54% of the votes supported banning the U.S. flag while 31% voted no.

Move On and other liberal groups have been twittering recently urging people to go to the site and vote to ban the flag.

If you'd like to vote, please go to the Fox News poll and share your opinion.

There was a time in this country, not so very long ago, when it was considered dis-respectful to wear the American flag as it was believed that this act was disrespectful to the actual flag.

I may have this wrong but I think - When Peter Fonda in "Easy Rider" had the flag on his motorcycle helmet it created quite a stir accross America in late (60's)It was not a favorable stir.

"Should the American flag be banned in America?"

No. The people IN America who find the AMERICAN flag IN America to be "offensive" should be banned from America!

Yea, just what I was thinking.

That is stuped that the kids wearing the American flag where kicked outt of school. Wearing the American flag is an honor to this country, i don't understand y people would think otherwise. Thats terable that they were kicked out of school becouse they were wearing the flag, thats sick, what the heck kind of cense is that.

You know...the way things are going, we might as well ban the flag.

We have banned the Constitution, so keeping the flag is just plain dishonest.

That flag is the banner of Liberty and Justice, unfurled over the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Liberty and justice have been destroyed by those sworn to defend them and the once-free disply no shred of bravery in reclaiming them.

So we don't deserve the flag either.

If they have a problem with them wearing pictures on their shirts with other images, then it was the kids fault for wearing a shirt with any image on it. If it was because they were wearing the flag and they considered it disrespectful, then maybe they should be teaching flag etiquette. Either way, there is no reason EVER to ban the US flag in the USA.

If you ban the flag, just the leave the keys to the White House with the president of Mexico. You might as well just hand over everything. At what point did it became shameful or inflammatory to have pride in one's own country? IF you don't like it, then leave it. Unreal that this is even remotely being considered. I guess the "Foxes" really do rule the hen house.

I dont get it...we leave our borders wide open, we dont support OUR constitution against enemies foreign and domestic, we can't even wear OUR countries colors or display them??? I enlisted in the Navy because I love this country and I will defend this country, but this insane statement to ban OUR own flag from being displayed is just beyond comprehension. So what should be displayed? What colors are YOU willing to defend? If the colors that I served under offends you, by all means find some other land to call "your home". When will you open your eyes, when will you say enough is enough, when will you acknowledge this is the best country in the world and not be afraid to say it??? For those who consider this to be a good idea to ban the flag, let me be the first person to help you find another country to poison.

The way that this is written, it sounds like the kids were going to be harmed. The question was misleading and sounded like the kids were threatened and by banning the flag they would be safe. The wording of the question is the reason for the percentage of yes votes. Be clear... yes or no. Then see what answers you get. Fox is trying to trick people into an answer that they want to hear. This saddens me because I used to like fox and now I have NO respect for them. Too many good people died for that flag and they still are ... for fox to try and trick people like this is appalling.

It used to be treason to disrespect the flag.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

This is bad reporting. Where are the links to the tweets about the poll from MoveOn.org and others? If you're gonna cite things, at least do us the decency of linking them so we can check them out for ourselves.

I can't even believe this is a question. The flag is a symbol of the United States, so why in the world would we ban it? This question only shows the deterioration of national pride and respect for the country that we live in. I am actually ashamed that a question like this should even be considered.

In grade school in the 1950's we learned to honor the flag. We stood, we looked at the flag and we placed our hand over our heart as we pledged alligence to the flag. We knew the flag was never ever to touch the ground. We learned great respect for the flag.
Looking back it only stands to reason that the flag would not he acceptable on a stinky old body.

Flag etiquette does not allow wearing the flag, if the students were asked to turn their shirts inside out for this reason I agree with the request. However; if they were asked to do so because of worry over someone being offended....the offended need to find another country to call home.

Do I expect Mexico, Canada or any country for that matter to hide their flag in my presence? Of course not! It is sad that only in this country would such a ridiculous idea even be suggested. The flag belongs here in this country, you angry non-Americans do not. What would our proud ancestors say if they were alive to hear this question and witness the rapid deterioration of this great country? Go home to the land of your flag and take George Soros with you! America will be far better off without you and the likes of Soros.

Are we going to talk about the real issue here of just beat around the bush? It’s not about the flag and never was! The schools are dead wrong on this but that’s not the point. The problem is that the school is tiring to fill a role they were not meant to play. Parents are supposed to raise kids not the school!

The American Flag, that represents the foundation of this ENTIRE country should NOT be banned from any establishment & flown PRO-PER-LY! If they truly feel offended by our ForeFathers, and the Men & Women of today, defending this country, then they can be home schooled! They don't have to like it, they have to know why the look at it today! If the American Flag is banned from schools, then every flag should be banned EVERYWHERE ELSE!!!!!!!!
