Those who have followed my humble column here at Examiner know that I am not a big fan of Manny Pacquiao's November 13 fight against Antonio Margarito for various reasons. My stance on this fight is that the disgraced Margarito, who is reeling from his 'Plaster of Paris' controversy and suspension on top of the beating he received from Shane Mosley following the incident, has not done enough- if anything at all- to deserve a super fight with boxing's best at this point in time.
As much as I think Margarito should be given a second chance- regardless if people think he deserves it or not- he needs to earn his way back up the pedestal. The only big name out there that I could think of for Margarito to face is Miguel Cotto, if only to settle some doubts on whether the beating Cotto received at his hands was legit. But that's a different topic altogether. Margarito needs to build his name back the hard way and prove that he truly is a top-flight boxer while erasing doubts about the legality of his weapons. So to shoot straight to the top, to me, sends the wrong message. Several fight fans, even Pacquiao fans, have expressed similar sentiments.
And then I encountered Yahoo Sports blogger Kevin Iole's take on the matter. Iole wrote: (****)

Iole also added "California could not prove Margarito knew the wrappings were illegal with clear and convincing evidence. I believe with all my heart he knew, but no one has come forward to say that Margarito was a willing participant in the scheme and two inspectors for the California State Athletic Commission testified at his disciplinary hearing that he did not appear to know [...] Because it couldn’t be proven conclusively that he knew, there are no legal reasons to deny him. But ethically, morally and in the best interests of boxing, Texas’ decision to grant Margarito a license is a farce and an affront to every tenet of fair play known to man."

To make a long story short, Iole blasted Pacquiao for taking a "money fight" and completely condemned Margarito because in his heart, Iole believes Margarito deliberately cheated.

I won't completely disagree with Iole's rant except for the fact the veteran scribe who has a picture of Huckleberry Hound as his Facebook profile picture is barking at the wrong tree. We all know whose idea this one truly is: None other than the old dog Iole's chummy old friend and Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum. Arum, who is set to make the most money out of everyone and is the main proprietor of this venture to begin with, is the one singular force that has steadfastly pushed for this fight to happen. Surely Iole knew that, but as to why he directed his ire toward Pacquiao and Margarito is his discretion.
Listen, Pacquiao definitely has a say in the decision making, but if you believed what he said all his career when he would utter "I'm only a fighter, it's my promoter's job to tell me who I fight next," during post-fight interviews, then why would you start doubting that now? Incidentally Arum has shut down questions from the media regarding the possibility of Pacquiao facing other fighters like Andre Berto, Paul Williams, Juan Manuel Marquez and whoever else. And as far as choosing Cotto over Margarito, how is that even a better choice? Pacquiao already thrashed Cotto last year and for him to fight a bigger guy that beat up Cotto and someone he has yet to face makes more sense to me.
I can see how Iole is trying to fight for what's right in his eyes, and that I can commend. I too feel that there's a wrong message being sent with Pacquiao-Margarito on November 13. GREED. But let's not be hypocrites here. If you want to correct a mistake or expose an injustice, you go after the main guy. You don't try to have the mob stone a drug addict, you go after the source and the main drug dealers. Pacquiao deserves some criticism for going ahead and fighting Margarito instead of pushing for other more worthy opponents, but what options did Arum really leave for him?
If anything, fighting Margarito is a huge risk for Pacquiao- a risk that I think has little reward other than money. I don't know what kind of Fantasy Boxing goes on in some people's minds to think Pacquiao would surely beat and batter Margarito because the last time I checked, Margarito is still 5 inches taller and naturally bigger than Pacquiao, and before his loss to Mosley, was considered to be one of the toughest hombres in boxing. Pacquiao in my opinion would have an easier task if he were to face Marquez or Bradley instead.
Take away all the drama outside the ring, this match-up is definitely going to be an exciting and explosive throwback type of war which will definitely be a crowd pleaser- something that Pacquiao has always aimed on doing each time he fights. I don't recall Iole going bananas when Mayweather chose a 'money fight' against the smaller and older Marquez last year, so I don't even want to hear it.
Is this about money? Yes. But is Pacquiao as horrible as Iole is painting him to be for choosing to fight Margarito for the money? Not buying it. If so, then what would that make Floyd Mayweather Jr.? The Anti-Christ? Please... If you truly want to criticize anybody on this one, go for the man with the master plan.

There is no better fight for PAcquiao at the moment. Cotto was already destroyed, so is Shane, and Berto is way below MArgarito's abilities and besides the Pacquiao Camp want an eight world title and I also want that and dont get too moved by mr. Kevin Iole, he talks bullspit.. It took him a long time to realize Floyd is a coward and then idolized him again when Floyd beat Marquez and why did he not condemn that fight when it was in fact some money making scheme. It's pretty unfair and there is nobody except Mayweather who is worthy enough for Pacman. But since Floyd doesnt want to fight Pacman, who else but what his promoter wants him to fight.

I will definitely boycott from buying the PPV and so are my friends. I don't care if you order it but this is just my sentiment for Pacquiao choosing a fight nobody is interested to watch. Believe me there's a lot of challenge out there with clean undefeated records. This fight is all about greed for Arum and Pac and not for the fans.

All of these fighters are undefeated and with a championship belt on their waist. All can give Pac a hard time and it will make it an exciting fight but not Margarito.
Margarito earned his merit to fight Pacquiao as he has done enough to prove it. He had fought big names in M Cotto, S Mosley, J Clottey, P Williams, K Cintron and Sergio Martines in their prime and has 44 fights his entire life. Bradley and Berto have 26 fights each and D Alexander only has 21 fights so far. All these 3 men have not fought any of those big names that I mentioned. Putting aside the plaster of Paris, Margarito, with the backup of entire Mexico and he fights, instead of Floyd Jr who ducks and demands more money/RBT, deserves more than anyone in boxing. Bob Arum choice makes sense in terms of money and popularity.

Margarito is dangerous because of his overwhelming size and height. He is neither a dummy or slow fighter. He can certainly punch. Though Pacquiao is obviously quicker, it is not good idea to trade punches with the much bigger opponent. Duran was one of the best fighters of all time; but he was no match to a bigger and taller guy like Hearns. Duran was not only whupped but knockout quick without a chance to prove competitive. Pacquiao may be aware of Margarito's size.
How come everyone's playing commissioner now and getting on the high horse with Margarito. He is not the first (or the last) boxer who misbehaves or caught cheating. There's a lot of them in boxing history -- remember Tyson biting off the ears of Holyfield? That's an ugly one. But as long as they served their sentence accorded to them by the authorities and granted their license back, I don't see why fans, writers should judge them more than what they got. Margo got caught, he served his sentence and got his license back. He should be able to fight anyone he can get. If it happens to be the big money fight with Pac, then good for him.
As a casual boxing fan, I just want to see a good fight. If fighter's would stop fighting based on ethical grounds that their opponent should not have prior convictions of any crime or wrongdoing, I don't think we'll get to see much interesting fights.

Granting that Margarito did know about the plaster of Paris. Don't you remember a time when you committed a sin and you were given a second chance? Is it the rule in the USA now that those who have "served time" should never be given a chance get re-integrated in the society? If your belief is so strong, maybe you should call for the imposition of Death Penalty on those who have killed a person(s). If you can't allow Margarito, who endangered the life or lives of boxers (granting he knowingly did that), then you should make noise whenever a convicted killer is given parole or is set free.
