Should Milwaukee inaugurate a "Concert Day" for January 25th?

The reason I ask is from finding two prestigious music institutions in Milwaukee having an upcoming concert on the same day but at different times. At 11:15 in the morning on Friday, January 25, pianist Joseph Kalichstein will join the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in performing Mozart's Concerto No. 22 in E-flat major for Piano and Orchestra, K. 482. The Orchestra at least will also add Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 4 in E-flat major, known as the "Romantic"--(version from 1888). Uihlein Hall will be the venue. The MSO honors pianist Kalichstein with a reputation of "legendary".

In the evening, come hear Stefanie Jacob at 7:30 with the Rubens Quartet over at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. Pieces included there will be: Beethoven's String Quartet Opus 18, No. 3; Joey Roukens' Visions at Sea; and César Franck's Piano Quintet in f minor. The Rubens Quartet has been described as "one of the finest young quartest of its generation since being founded in 2000", hailing from the Netherlands. According to the WCM, Rubens Quartet "is praised for its warm sound, remarkable sense of rhythm and harmony, and ability to communicate with an audience." Stefanie Jacob is a part of the Conservatory faculty and also its resident ensemble Prometheus Trio.

There is more to the performances than just the music. Activities surround the MSO event. The Orchestra seeks to let listeners in on the discussion on "what makes the repertoire compelling, pertinent, and fascinating." Thus for the preceding hour patrons are welcome to participate in what's called the Prelude Fashion Show, or Behind the Notes. Then following the concert, Kalichstein, the other musicians, and conductor Edo de Waart will entertain and inform with a Q&A session at a Meet the Artist Luncheon. This paying one requires registration, so call ahead at (414) 226-7810 or email league@mso.org.

Finally, the concert ticket details: buy online, email info@mso.org, or call (414) 291-7605 for "Bruckner's 'Romantic'". Buy online or call (414) 276-5760 for "Rubens Quartet with Stefanie Jacob". General admission to the evening concert is $25.00 (plus "$1 per Subscription Service Fee" for online orders). Students with ID are $12.00 at the door with advance phone reservations. WCM students are welcome without charge but must register ahead. Two forms of parking are available: $10 valet at the front door (1584 N. Prospect Ave.) or free one block to the north at Milwaukee Eye Care, 1684 N. Prospect Ave.

Please note: "Bruckner's 'Romantic'" will also be performed Saturday, January 26, at 8:00 also in Uihlein Hall, preceded one hour by Behind the Notes, which will take place in the Anello Atrium at the Marcus Center.
