Should Lyoto Machida quit drinking his own urine in lead-up to UFC title fight? (Video)

According to a Feb. 23 report from Fansided.com, UFC star Lyoto Machida is one of just a handful of athletes who subscribes to the idea that urine-drinking enhances athletic performance.

"He drinks a cup of his own urine every morning, before going to do kata’s on a floating canoe," Fansided says of Machida. "He has a pet monkey. He is epic in a way no man should be allowed to be."

Drinking one's morning urine was an ancient yoga practice designed to promote meditation and good health.

Urine was used in several ancient cultures for various health, healing, and cosmetic purposes, practices which are still used by some people of these cultures today.

In Euro-American culture, these practices are known as urine therapy, a form of alternative medicine.

Machida explained in a 2009 interview why he drinks a cup of his own urine each morning.

“My father does that for a long time and bring it to us. People think it’s a joke (laughs). I never said it in the United States because I don’t know how the fans will react," Machida said. "I drink my urine every morning like a natural medicine.”

Machida may be due for a change in routine after putting in a sleepy-headed effort against Dan Henderson in the co-main event of UFC 157.

"There is no doubt that Machida is the number one contender - he just beat Dan Henderson, who was the number one contender," White explained. "He won. Listen, Dan Henderson is a tough guy. Durable guy. He did land some good shots, but Machida pulled out the split decision win."

However, White agrees with fans that the Henderson vs Machida bout wasn't exactly action-packed.

"Oh, it was a spectacular fight, tons of action! Action-packed from bell-to-bell," White sarcastically told Ariel Helwani on the UFC 157 post-fight show on FUEL TV. "C'mon! The fight didn't live up to the hype. Neither one of them did anything the last three minutes of the third round."

Heading into Machida's title shot against the winner of Sonnen vs Jones, perhaps he should try staying hydrated with water rather than his own urine.
