Square spoke this past weekend at PAX Prime and said Lightning Returns will feature a brand-new story, world, characters and an enhanced game play system.
Novus Partus is comprised of four large islands and it will provide gamers with the chance to roam around in the open-world and explore it as they please.
There have been some reports that state Lightning Returns will be playable on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 and various video game sites, such as IGN list the game as playable on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
But should the game be delayed until it can be released onto the next Playstation and Xbox?
Well since the game won't release until 2013, and it does not have any specificity to the date, it could be argued that the game would fit well with the release of one of the next consoles from Sony or Microsoft.
There are a variety of reasons perhaps why Square does not wish to release the game onto those systems though.
First, unless the developers know exactly when the systems are coming out and still say no, there is no certainty that the consoles will be released next year. So far it's only rumors, even though people strongly think they will be debuting next year.
Also, from a cost standpoint, it could be considerably more expensive to port the game onto the next-generation consoles. In theory, Square could still do that even after the game has been released.
Another contributing factor is the fact that Square is no doubt already in the process of developing the game, so a change in consoles would certainly delay the release and development of the game for a considerable amount of time.
They most likely do not want to delay the game and would like to get it released in the time frame they have in mind.
But wouldn't the game sell more if it was released alongside a launch of Sony or Microsoft's console?
Not necessarily because when the new consoles debut, they will not have the established base of players that Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 currently have. Square will make more money by releasing on the latter two consoles and will probably save on some development costs as well.
It still would be amazing to see Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII on a Playstation 4 or Xbox 720 though.
Only time, and Square Enix, will tell what the future holds for the game and what platforms it will be released on.
