Should firearm noise reduction devices be called 'silencers' or 'suppressors?'

There has been a surge of interest in firearm silencer ownership in Michigan since a recent Attorney General opinion made firearm noise reduction devices legal for Michigan residents to possess.

One long running debate focuses on what is the correct name for these devices. Are they properly called “silencers” or “suppressors?”

The correct answer is: “It depends.”

Most manufacturers and other firearms industry professionals prefer the term “suppressor.” This preference is due to the fact that while the devices do reduce, or suppress, the noise of a firearm’s discharge, they do not completely “silence” the report.

In a recent (and now closed) thread on the Michigan Gun Owners forum one poster went so far as to say that the term “silencer” was incorrect and should not be used.

My view is that this positition, while fairly common, overlooks some critical facts. The original inventor, Hiram Percy Maxim, coined the term “silencer” for his noise reduction devices. This term is seen in original Maxim silencer advertisements and other contemporary literature. The term “suppressor,” by contrast, was more recently adopted by those who wished a more precise descriptive term of the unit’s function.

Another strong argument for the use of the term “silencer” is Federal law. The National Firearms Act (NFA) uses the word “silencer” and the related ATF forms use that word as well. The word “suppressor” is not found in official NFA language.

In my opinion, both terms are equally valid. If you want the historically correct and more precise legal term, use the word “silencer." If you want the more commonly accepted term in the industry; use the word “suppressor.” Whatever you call them, these noise reduction devides can make shooting a more enjoyable experience for shooters and their neighbors alike.
