"Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it" Proverbs 22:6
Our country seems to be raising a generation of young people who are cold, heartless, disrespectful and even evil. This is hard to hear, but it's the truth. We have only to look at recent headlines to see it. In Connecticut, Adam Lanza walks into a school and takes out a number of innocent children. In another city, a 12 year old took the lives of his parents and siblings and showed absolutely no remorse. Instead, he bemoaned the fact that he was caught before he could go to Wal-mart and shoot more people.
What's going on? Have parents dropped the ball? In many cases--the answer would be yes. Parents seem to be leaving their kids to their own devices. Training, which according to dictionary.com is developing or forming the habits, thoughts or behavior of a child, is no longer in vogue especially when that training includes the ways of the Lord. We spend more time training our pets than we do our children.
Teaching your children what the Bible says about lying, stealing, respect, sex, murder, love, etc. is considered brainwashing by some unbelievers and the intellectual elites. They believe that children should be allowed to decide for themselves whether they want to practice their parent's religion. It should not be forced on them..
Christians should reject that notion. We have a duty to train our children. We should actively, deliberately and methodically train our children in the ways of God. We have a prime opportunity to instill God's wonderful truths in our children and that's when they are young and impressionable. Don't wait and don't leave this important responsibility someone else.
