Is yoga unchristian?
Yoga is under fire by Southern Baptist Seminary president, Albert Mohler, warning Christians not to practice yoga.
Mohler states "I'm not against exercise. I learned from a whole lot of Christians who think they're practicing yoga, but what they described to me is not what yoga has historically been.
Christians who participate in yoga are embracing, or at minimum flirting with, a spiritual practice that threatens to transform their own spiritual lives."
Mohler defends his beliefs by telling the associate press his objection to ““the idea that the body is a vehicle for reaching consciousness with the divine.”
“That’s just not Christianity,” Mohler stated.
In his online essay Mohler argues that Christians who practice yoga“must either deny the reality of what yoga represents or fail to see the contradictions between their Christian commitments and their embrace of yoga.”
Mohler is not the only christian leader who is opposed to yoga, christian television guru Pat Robertson describes yoga as “ spooky and evil.” He tell his viewer's that by chanting the mantra's you are actually praying to Hindu gods and not even realizing it.
So what exactly is yoga? Yoga is simply “union” with God, or whoever or whatever the individual chooses to unite or connect with . As with anything else, whether you pray to God on your hands and knee's or with your bottom up in the air doing the down dog, it will be God who will listen to you.
