With the U. S. Government shutting down this week, many citizens, including Christians are experiencing fear and uncertainty about their financial future. The question is “should Christians depend on our Government to sustain them and/or provide for their financial needs”?
The Bible contains scriptures from Genesis to Revelation about the dangers of His people putting their trust in this World’s system. “The father of faith”, Abraham refused to partner with the king of Sodom. Instead he chose to give a tithe of his increase to Melchizedek, who is described as a type and shadow of Jesus Christ. Of course Abraham became a very rich man by putting all his trust in God.
The Prophet Samuel unsuccessfully warned the Children of Israel about them having a King (1 Sam. 8:10-18). The outcome of God’s chosen people getting a King as they desired, was a disaster and ultimately led them back into captivity in Babylon under the evil leadership of Nebuchadnezzar.
Even King Solomon wrote many scriptures in the Book of Proverbs that inspire us to put our trust in God and not in man. One scripture in particular stands out about the importance of citizens making right choices about whom we elect as leaders. Proverbs 29:2 makes reference to how people can be in peace when righteous people are in authority and conversely, when unrighteous individuals are put in decision making positions the people mourn
.
Throughout the Bible there are numerous scriptures and historical events that point to the dangers of God’s people being under the thumb of dishonest Government officials. Admittedly, we are not always sure who we should vote for. Neither do we know which politicians actually have our best interest at heart. That means we have to be led by the Holy Spirit in order to take care of our families, especially in these uncertain times.
