The countdown begins for the National day of love, Valentine’s Day. Ever since we were children we have celebrated this day. We have attended Dinners and Galas, held Valentines Parties and Balls to express our love to our valentine of choice. We have given gifts from Snoopy cards to Godiva Chocolates. But have we stopped and asked ourselves why we celebrate this day? What is the true meaning of it all? Where did it begin? And then there is the ‘Big question’. Should we as Christians -married or single -celebrate Valentine’s Day?
The origin of Valentine’s Day is based upon Christian and Pagan history. Implications of origin and ideology- from a number of Roman martyrs names St. Valentine to the Greek mythological wedding of Greek god Zeus and goddess Hera, and every legend in between. Although the origin is up for debate the underlying theme and reason to celebrate this legendary day is the same-LOVE. So the answer to the question is –Yes we as Christians can and should embrace Valentine’s Day!
On this day we celebrate love for our spouses, children, parents, siblings, friends, kindred and acquaintances. Who better to celebrate this day than Christians? John 3:16 states that “ For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, and whose so ever believeth in Him shall not perish , but have everlasting life. That has to be the Greatest Love of All and most certainly Jesus is and was the Greatest Gift of All, and that is worth celebrating!
We as Christians should make Jesus Christ The Reason for the Season. We should celebrate God’s love for us by showing love to one another. In Matthew 26:36-40 the Bible tells us that the greatest commandment of them all is that we love one another. By having full knowledge that obedience is better than sacrifice we should embrace this Holiday!
