Today in Washington D.C., a high-speed chase is reported to have ended with shots being fired outside the Capitol building. After the suspect reportedly powered through a security checkpoint and attempted multiple times to run over responding officers, injuring at least two, shots were fired and the still unidentified suspect was pronounced dead.
As of the publication of this article, the suspect's name and motive are still unknown. Though it only took minutes for a Congressional Republican to blame the incident on President Obama and the Democrats.
Rep. Tim Griffin (R-AR) first tweeted from his personal account at 2:23 p.m. that he'd heard or heard about "gun shots outside the Capitol." Later, at 2:25 p.m., Griffin tweeted the following:
Stop the violent rhetoric President Obama, Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi. #Disgusting
Reaction to the congressman's unrestrained eagerness to pin the blame on the opposition were, to put it lightly, predominantly unfavorable, prompting Griffin to post an apology at 3:08
"The shooting today is a terrible and inexcusable tragedy and an act of terroism," said Griffin. "No one but the shooter is to blame. I tweeted out of emotion but agree that the timing was not helpful."
Griffin now might want to apologize to the "shooter", who would have been one of the responding officers, and not the suspect, who had instead been trying to run them over with a car.
