Short-term long distance

April 4, 2012

Being in a long distance relationship when you and your partner both live in the same country is exponentially more easy than if one of you goes to, say, China. Many more factors come into play when you are trying to maintain communication and your honey is on vacation in a different country. Although this kind of distance may be short-term for many, the obstacles that arise are on a whole other level.

If you or your partner are in a different country, you probably won't be able to talk over the phone, since the majority of telephone companies charge astronomical prices for long-distance phone calls. This also applies to any sort of data that is received through the phone such as text messages. Before one of you leaves on your trip, you should set up another means of communication.

The best and least expensive way to communicate between different countries, especially if the time difference is so great that you do not share many waking hours with one another, is through email. Make sure to find out if the country you are going to has different outlets so you can purchase a plug adapter before you go.

Because people on vacation tend to have a packed schedule, especially if they are on a group tour where their itinerary is set for them, there might be some delay between emails. In addition, some hotels do not even offer free wi-fi, so that could pose another challenge. The worst part is that your partner may not find out about the absence of wi-fi or any other obstacles preventing them from contacting you until it is too late and you are already worried. If you have not heard from your honey in a few days, don't fret. There could be more than a handful of reasons why they are not responding promptly.

Relax and find a way to occupy your time. Many couples do not realize the amount of time they spend with their significant other until they are separated. If you find yourself with nothing to do, call up your friends and head over to Crema Coffee Roasting Co. for a nice long chat.

For the lucky ones, this kind of distance is very temporary. For other's this is a lifestyle. Whichever one, there are many ways to overcome any obstacles that are set before you with your international romance.
