May and June are great months for new writers, with lots of opportunities to enter their work in some of the many writing competitions taking place around the globe. There are also various publishing opportunities for emerging writers. The individual websites provide all the details on entry guidelines and fees, if applicable.

McSweeny's Quarterly is accepting fiction submissions, for a limited time. McSweeney’s are known for spotting new and developing writers.

Armchair Shotgun is a literary magazine that publishes fiction, non-fiction and poetry works. In order to maintain their impartiality, the editors make a point of assessing all submissions without knowing the author's identity.

The Lorian Hemingway short story competition is specifically for emerging writers. Entries must be under 3500 words and the competition is open to all global writers.
