Sonora Review, a publication of University of Arizona’s Department of English, is holding two writing contests in the short form category.

The Short Short Contest awards a prize of $1000 and publication in Sonora Review. Maximum word count of 1,000 words. Entry fee is $15. Deadline for submission is May 1, 2010.

The Concentrated Nonfiction Contest is Sonora Review’s newest writing contest. Submissions must be works of unpublished nonfiction with a maximum of 1,000 words. Essays of all varieties are welcome. Entry fee is $15. Deadline for submission is June 1, 2010.

The Writer’s Loft: Helmed by the famed Jerry Cleaver, author of Immediate Fiction and Professor of Professional Fiction at Northwestern University.

StoryStudio Chicago: StoryStudio’s mission is to “foster confidence and creativity in writing and storytelling through teaching, discussion, performance and community building. Writers and performers of all levels—from beginners to professionals—are invited to participate.”

Neighborhood Writing Alliance: The Neighborhood Writing Alliance holds several weekly writing workshops in neighborhoods across the city. Registration is free.

NewTown Writers: NewTown is a gay and lesbian writers’ group with regular workshops every two weeks. Registration is free.

TheUndeniables.org is an online critique group for those with restricted schedules who may not have the time to participate in a conventional classroom workshop. Registration is free. Wordpress account required.
