Short skirts risk rape comment lands Richard Graham in trouble

British lawmaker Richard Graham says that short skirts risk rape. This comment has the man in hot water. Women's rights groups have spoken out against the lawmaker, according to an article by the Huffington Post on Jan. 27.

His insensitive remark has gotten him trouble with women in the U.K. Women's right activists believe that a victim isn't raped because of her style of clothing. They added that Richard Graham is blaming rape victims for their assault.

Graham doesn't appear to care. He further added that high heels cause rape, as well. He said in the Citizen newspaper if a woman is "blind drunk" and wearing sexy clothing, she wouldn't be able to escape her attacker. He said that women are also at risk if they walk home late at night in provocative clothing.

Richard did backtrack on his comments. On Sunday, he wrote in his blog that there's no excuse for men to prey on women. He believes his comments are far from implying the old-school phrase, "She's asking for it."

The short skirts risk rape comment by Richard Graham reinforces the stigma that it's the woman's fault if she gets raped. It also says that men can't control themselves if they see a woman in provocative clothing.
