Short Hills Mall shooting: Lawyer killed in front of his wife during carjacking

A Short Hills Mall shooting on Sunday night left a 30-year-old lawyer dead in what police are calling an apparent carjacking. The Short Hills Mall in New Jersey was the scene of a tragic robbery in which a Range Rover was stolen after a man was brutally murdered in front of his wife, Fox News reported on Dec. 16.

Details surrounding the Short Hills Mall shooting are still forthcoming but initial reports say that two young men bombarded the victim, Dustin Friedland, and his wife while they were just about to get in their SUV after finishing up a night of shopping at the Short Hills Mall.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray shared details on the Short Hills Mall shooting incident and according to her, Friedland received a bullet in the head after he resisted the carjackers.

"It obviously was a car with some value,” Murray stated. "Our police department is out there and I’m sure they’re doing everything that needs to be done."

The suspects spared the life of Friedland's wife and she escaped the incident unharmed. Witnesses to the Short Hills Mall shooting told investigators that they recalled seeing two men flee the scene in the vehicle shortly after hearing gunshots.

Although emergency crews arrived at the scene of the Short Hills Mall shooting rather quickly, Friedland was pronounced dead at Morristown Memorial Hospital a few hours later.

The Short Hills Mall is located approximately 20 miles west of New York City, and a temporary mall lockdown was issued following the shooting.

The Short Hills Mall was reopened after it was determined that there was no longer a threat in the area. The mall was open later than usual due to the holiday shopping season.

Authorities found the Range Rover in Newark, which is about 11 miles from the mall, Syracuse reports. However, the Short Hills Mall shooting suspects remain at large.

Authorities say the suspects targeted the couple shortly after they exited the Short Hills Mall.

The Short Hills Mall shooting is currently under investigation and police are looking for the suspects and they have offered a $10,000 reward to anyone with clues leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the mall shooting. The number to call is 877-847-7432.

The Short Hills Mall shooting incident unnerved other shoppers in the area because of the blatant act of the crime. The shooting comes almost two months after another incident in a mall in New Jersey when a man terrorized shoppers by shooting in the air and later committing suicide.
