The San Jose Earthquakes scored early and despite being a man down held on to a 1-0 win against the Philadelphia Union on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, CA. Shea Salinas scored the lone goal of the game in the 15th minute.

Salinas took a pass from Sam Cronin and slid it past Union goalie Zac MacMath early in the game for the game winner. In the 57th minute, midfielder Rafael Baca was ejected after getting his second yellow card of the game after sliding hard on Philadelphia's Conor Casey. Even with a man down, the Earthquakes stood tall and shrugged off Philadelphia's chances and even got a few of their own.

San Jose improved to 10-11-7 in the season and kept its slim playoff hopes alive. The Earthquakes currently sat at number eight in the West. They will host the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday, September 14, 2013.
