Shop while you hunt with locally owned businesses after Black Friday

Shop Independent Durham Week kicks off on Saturday, Nov 26. Sponsored by Sustain-a-Bull, an independent business alliance in Durham, the week will include promotions and discounts from over 30 local member businesses. From jewelry to yoga, a wide variety of products and services will be available to customers for purchase with deals not typically offered during the year.

Purchasing from Shop Independent Durham Week participants would be good for Durham’s economy. According to a 2008 study by Civic Economics, for every $100 you spend in a store, $68 will remain in the local economy if the store is locally owned. Only $43 remain with a non-locally owned firm. In the same study, researchers found if consumers shifted their spending to an extra 10 percent in purchases from locally owned firms, it would create a significant increase in new activity with an estimated $137 million in additional output and $53 million in additional wages from over 1600 added jobs. Participants of Shop Independent Durham Week are all locally owned business. Owners of participating firms must live in Durham and have business headquarters in Durham city limits.

In addition to shopping, you will have an opportunity to participate in a city-wide scavenger hunt in which you will be charged with taking a picture of yourself in front of a secret location that changes daily. Participants must connect with Sustain-a-Bull on Facebook or Twitter to get clues on what the secret location is. Entrants will be eligible to win gift certificates to Sustain-a-Bull member businesses.

So save some money from Black Friday to shop with Durham businesses during this week and take advantage of great deals. The last day to shop in this event and participate in the scavenger hunt is Sunday, December 4.
