Each one of us has known someone in our lifetime that has been affected by breast cancer and one in eight women will develop the deadly disease. Sadly enough, 40,000 women will die from breast cancer this year and that is way too many.
Every year, the Susan G. Komen Foundation takes amazing strides in making e a difference towards finding a cure. It is one of the leading breast cancer organizations in the world. With staggering statistics of investing more than $790 million in breast cancer research and $1.5 billion in community outreach programs over the past 30 years, it is no wonder that the foundation is so highly regarded by medical institutions, hospitals and breast cancer survivors to name a few.
The month of October is widely recognized as 'Breast Cancer Awareness Month' and many retail companies open their hearts with a generosity that is humbling.
Crane & Canopy is an online home goods company that offers beautifully-designed high quality bedding at innovative price points. Customers can enjoy premium designer bedding with designs that keep up with the most current trends. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Crane & Canopy is introducing a special edition pink dotted lavender eye pillow in hot pink and light pink for $12 each. Half of the proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. In addition, half of the proceeds from the sale of the company's pink bedding will also go to benefit the cause.
Companies that cater to beauty are also raising funds to build awareness and support research and education. Estee Lauder, known for timeless beauty, has been one of the leaders in philanthropic efforts to end breast cancer. Since 1992, through special edition products, promotions, events and more, Lauder has raised $50 million with hopes of raising another $5 million this year. Spokeswoman Elizabeth Hurley kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month for Estee Lauder at Bloomingdale's in New York City. She lost her grandmother to the dreaded disease so this day was even more significant to her. Estee Lauder is donating 100% of the sales from their popular product, Evelyn Lauder Dream Solid Perfume Compact during the month of October. Other brands such as Origins with its limited edition 'Drink Up Lip Balm' and Clinique with its limited edition 'Almost Lipstick' and 'Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion' are helping to lead the battle as well.
Also participating and doing their part are retail giants such as Ralph Lauren and his Pink Pony Collection, White House/Black Market and their 'Give Hope' Collection, and Ann Taylor Loft which is introducing a brand new product, the result of a collaboration between the retailer and Giuliana Rancic.
We simply cannot forget QVC's annual 'FFANY Shoes On Sale' shoe event in its 20th big year and set to take place on Thursday, October 10, 2013. Tune in to QVC on television from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and purchase name brand shoes for ridiculously low prices. Each year this event raises a tremendous amount of money to benefit Breast Cancer Awareness. Over 1 million pairs of shoes have been sold and FFCF (Fashion Footwear Charitable Foundation) has donated over $40 million to distinguished medical institutions for breast cancer research and education. Shop all month long as the website features a 'Shoe Of The Day' every weekday during the month of October.
On October 1st, as the month kicked off, the Empire State Building lit up the New York skyline with brilliant pink lights. It made for quite a majestic view. Other statuesque buildings around the world also lit up with an energy to fight and win against breast cancer.
Today it was an emotional moment as Anne Morris, CEO of Susan G. Komen Connecticut, rang the Opening Bell at NASDAQ MarketSite -- 4 Times Square -- 43rd & Broadway -- Broadcast Studio.
As women, we all love to shop and this is the month when it will mean so much more in the fight against Breast Cancer.
