Them Shop Girls... they, umm... sure like to shop! That seems like a worthy intro to this week's article. Though, truth is, their show deviates from shopping more often than not. It's not aimed at men, but there's been plenty on here I found useful, no exaggeration.
On today's show, the ladies threw out numbers which gave an idea of the dedication Americans are giving for the 'Bowl. 173 million are expected to share the joy at their TV sets, up from 171 last year. NRF.com (National Retail Federation) claims the 171 million, without specifying how much of the game was viewed.
What's peculiar, however, is the UK Guardian claims 111 million number to be the number of viewers, 163 mil. total including less avid watchers. This is directly from the online source:
"In terms of reach – viewers who tuned in to watch "some part" of this year's game – Super Bowl XLV also set a new record at 162.9 million, up on the 153.4 million for the 2010 match and more than half the total US population. According to the 2010 census, the US population is 308 million."
Well, either way, dig into this or not, it's an event not worthy of missing, with commercials costing an average of 3 million dollars, all of them top-notch TV pieces aiming to make history. Don't forget to Tune In Online and On Your Mobile Device (for all of you having to work that day). The Shop Girls also mentioned that an average of $63 is projected to be spent on the 'Bowl this year, up from $59 last year. Don't forget the #1 foam finger, they said; can't have a game without it. Certainly is hard to argue with that, ain't it.
Then the show veered toward Valetines Day, the one-&-only. Turns out, men spend almost twice more than women do for this holiday - men $163 average, women $83. This the girls tried to justify by guys' apparent tendencies to wait 'till last minute (not this guy here, but supposedly, many of us). Guys wait 'till late minute, the girls said, and then are forced to buy whatever is left. How they got the impression is a bit of a mystery to me, but one would expect radio hosts to come in contact with a variety of people, so I step down and let them have it :-D (that was a smiley face of a kind).
Another tidbit to take away from the show was that roses are, apparently, overrated. One of the ladies (it takes a more dedicated fan to tell the girls apart by the voices) mentioned that she's less-than-impressed by roses on V-day. She's more into tulips, and the ladies agreed that it's tulip season. One might take away from this that the standard teddy bear and rose gift may not satisfy the more picky and principilized lady in one's life. For such scenarios, one might want to think outside the box and take ideas from outside sources, such as making a song dedicated to your valentine, following instructions given on the site. Other ideas are also online, like the giant lollipop (sounds worse than it really is) and doesn't have to be limited to a child.
Now, onto the Oscars. What I got from the show is that the ballots for the Academy Awards have been handed out this week, which is why the battle is still on. Many actors are still campaigning to win the admiration of the Oscars' committee. Brad Pitt, the ladies believe, is bummed out about not winning an award yet, while his pal Clooney has a couple already.
And, to wrap it up, a bit of random trivia for my readers. The girls mentioned that princess Diana was five-foot-eleven, though "looked much taller." They'd then went on an on-air brainstorming spree to decide who else in Hollywood was 5'11. Gisele Bundchen was the only girl they found; Pitt and Clooney were the only guys with that height. Nicole Kidman was an inch short; what you gonna do.
So, I wanna end by wishing all my readers a party-filled, alcohol-infused, Dorito chip-happy and loud-as-hell Superbowl Sunday!!! May the best men win. I'd also wish a happy V-day, but I hope to release more articles by then. As a reminder: Superbowl XLVI will take place on NBC channel 11 at 5pm CST. It can be viewed live on mobile only by Verizon Wireless customers (I apologize if I got this wrong, but I tried to install the right app on my Virgin Mobile phone from online and was told 'this item not avail on your carier'). It can also be viewed online through NBC. The Shop Girls are on from 11am to 1pm every Saturday on MyTalk 107.1FM.
