Do you know if the brand of your favourite shampoo tests on animals? How about your toothpaste, or that new body wash you just purchased?
Each year, millions of animals are injected with or forced to ingest or inhale massive doses of test substance. Sometimes they are even cut up while still alive. Universities, pharmaceutical companies, and commercial facilities are the ones who are guilty of providing animal-testing services to industries. The vast majority is due to the government’s mandated testing requirements.
Don’t be fooled, there are many cosmetic companies that continue to test on animals year after year, and it's important to be aware of them. If you’ve got any of these brands currently in your makeup bag or shower basket, you’d better not wait any longer to clean out your cabinets.
Brands that DO test:
- 3M
- Avon
- Cetaphil
- Coppertone
- Iams
- Johnson & Johnson (Aveeno, Band-Aid, Carefree, Clean & Clear, Listerine, Lubriderm, Neutrogena, Purell, ROC)
- L’Oreal (Biotherm, Garnier, Giorgio Armani, Helena Rubinstien, Kiehl’s, La Roche-Posay, Lancome, Maybelline, Redken, Vichy, Yves Saint Laurent)
- Lux

- S.C. Johnson (Drano, Glade, Windex)
- Shiseido
- Unilever (Axe, Dove, Elizabeth Arden, Ponds, Suave, Sunsilk, Vaseline)
- Vichy
And that’s not all of them! If you don’t see a label on a product that clearly states “NOT TESTED ON ANIMALS,” that’s usually a red flag.
Remember, your dollar is your vote. By purchasing these brands, your dollar will continue to fuel the violent and inhumane industry. The best thing you can do is email these companies about this matter and ask them to go cruelty-free. Explain your viewpoint with hard facts and request other alternatives that don’t require harm to animals.
In the meantime, you can continue to support brands that refrain from animal testing.
