Shootout on the Las Vegas Strip leaves three dead and three injured

Today's early morning Las Vegas street shootout has left three people dead and more injured. The shootings started at about 4:30 a.m. when a rolling gun battle led to a multiple car accident. The shootings happened at the intersection of Flamingo and Las Vegas boulevards, a normally busy intersection. According to a Feb 21 article by KNTV Las Vegas, police closed the northbound off-ramp from Interstate 15 that leads to Flamingo Boulevard.

According to witnesses, a Range Rover SUV were exchanging gunfire before the Maserati hit a taxi. The taxi to burst into flames. The Maserati driver, the taxi driver and a taxi passenger were killed. A passenger in the Maserati had gunshot wounds and was taken to the hospital with three others. The SUV driver left the scene.

The intersection of Flamingo and Las Vegas boulevards is the most well known part of the Las Vegas strip. The Bellagio lies to the west, Flamingo Las Vegas is to the north and Ballys and Paris lie to the south. The area was populated and had plenty of witnesses who could help with the investigation. There is no known motive for the gun battle to have broken out.

Las Vegas gang violence has taken a huge jump in the past few months, according to a Feb. 18 article by KNTV News. Las Vegas Police responded to a dozen murders in January alone. One murder was committed in the street with 30 bullets fired. Half of the murders were determined to be gang-related and they were concentrated in one neighborhood that lies between Eastern and Martin Luther King in Las Vegas.
