Police received a phone call mid-afternoon on Wednesday from someone in the State of New York. The caller requested that the police check on a female resident at the Wellington Farms apartment complex in Gallatin. When police arrived they found Kaitlyn Wilchenski shot multiple times in the head and her husband, Christopher Wilchenski, with a single gun shot wound in the head. Both were pronounced dead on the scene. A large caliber weapon was found at the scene as reported by WSMV.

Police are investigating as an apparent murder/suicide. The couple, both in their twenties, had been having marital issues for some time. NewsChannel5 reported that a neighbor who lives underneath the Wilchenskis said he heard the couple arguing intensely earlier in the afternoon over who was going to keep the dog. Shortly after that, he heard a loud thump that shook his chandelier. Police discovered that a petition for divorce had been filed on Tuesday. They did not say who filed.

Officer Bill Storment with Gallatin Police said, “Whatever it is that brought them to this point really isn't worth losing your life over.” That summarized the sentiment of other residents of the apartment complex as well.

Nicole Harris lives on the other side of the complex. “I feel safe, but my heart just breaks for those people! No argument is worth losing your life over!!! So sad!”

Lisa Bratcher's son lives in the building next door. “Sad... very sad! Praying for that family! So sad and scary!”
