On Thursday, September 19, shortly after 10:00 p.m., a shooting at a southwest Chicago park left 13 people wounding including a three year-old boy. His family reported that when he arrived at the hospital, he was alert and in critical condition.

The shooting occurred in Chicago’s Back of the Yard neighborhood and of the 13 victims, three were in critical condition and the other 10 were either listed in serious or fair condition. The little three year-olds uncle, Julian Harris spoke with the Chicago Sun-Times regarding the shooting.

Harris reported that the men who shot into Cornell Square Park first shot at him and his nephew who received a gunshot wound to his cheek. The men had dreadlocks and were driving a gray sedan when they opened fire on the park.

Harris said, “They hit the light pole next to me, but I ducked down and ran into the house. They’ve been coming round here looking for people to shoot every night, just gang-banging stuff. It’s what they do.”

Chicago police department spokesman, Ron Gaines wouldn’t reveal any details of the investigation however, he did say that no arrests had been made yet. The victims were being interviewed while investigators tried to determine exactly what happened during the shooting.

One police officer, Amina Greer reported that 10 ambulances responded to the scene to treat and transport the victims to local hospitals. Of the 13 victims, three were minor children. One was the three year-old little boy and the other two were ages 15 and 17.

Rev. Corey Brooks, pastor at New Beginnings Church spoke with the little boy’s family outside Mt Sinai hospital where he was being treated. Brooks said, “He was talking when they first brought him in, but he’s heavily sedated now.”
