Jimmy Roach. An interesting name for a man. Even more interesting is that a man with such a moniker has such a large heart. For the last three years, Jimmy and his band mates in Dead Cat Lounge have been putting on the annual Shoebox Christmas Benefit. This year’s event is taking place this Saturday night December 7th at Insomniacs in New Port Richey. Donating their time, as well as some toys for needy children, are 18 of Tampa Bays finest punk, ska and metal bands.
The idea behind the shoebox gift is simple. Instead of giving just one large gift to those less fortunate, gather a bunch of small items that fit into a shoe box instead. The contribution can consist of toys, candy, school supplies or anything else that can fit into the box. Of course, you can get personal and decorate the shoe box to reflect your own personality.
For Roach, the idea originated from his childhood. His mother was an employee of Walt Disney World in Orlando. Each year around the holidays, the popular theme park would have a clearance sale on remaining merchandise which was only available to their employees. Roach and his mother would then buy as much as they could afford and then donate those items to others who may not be able to have a nice Christmas otherwise. Now, as an adult, Roach carries on that tradition of giving by throwing a mega-party each year. The event is ALL AGES. With each shoebox gift brings free admission to the show. For those that do not bring an offering, the price is only $5, which is an insanely small price to pay for such an event.
There will be a raffle throughout the night with items provided from many of the events sponsors. Included in the prize pool is a new guitar from Dean Guitars in Tampa as well as a $25 gift certificate from Daddy Kool Records in St. Pete. There is a $50 gift certificate from Lucky Star Hair Salon in St. Pete, as well as a pair of tickets to see G. Love & Special Sauce from local concert promoter, No Clubs. Two pairs of tickets to see Primus frontman, Les Claypool, are being provided by The State Theater. Many of the bands will also be donating their own merchandise for prizes as well.
All proceeds from the event will be used to purchase more toys, which will all be delivered to Westcoast Church, who will then distribute them to those that are most in need.
Food will be provided by one of the areas popular food trucks, American Weiner, who will be cooking up their delicious hot dogs and sausages.
Also making an appearance after his stint at the local Publix, will be Drunken A-hole Santa, who will be available for photos. It is recommended that you don’t sit on his lap!
For those who are unable to attend, you can watch the LIVE video stream on uStream.
