The free summit on GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, began this morning with John Robbins of the Food Revolution Network interviewing Andrew Kimbrell. Kimbrell is a leading public interest attorney and founder and director of The Center for Food Safety.
The Center for Food Safety (CFS) and other like-minded organizations have been able to stop the genetically altering of tomatoes, rice, algae, salmon and several other food crops. A major accomplishment of the CFS has been the defeat of the Monsanto Protection Act in Congress September 26 of this year. CFS members sent hundreds of thousands of emails and made as many calls to Congress demanding the removal of the Monsanto protection Act.
Originally called Farmer Assurance Provision, the act would have barred federal courts from being able to stop the sale or planting of controversial genetically modified (GMO) or genetically engineered (GE) seeds, no matter what health issues may arise concerning GMOs in the future.
In today's interview, Kimbrell spoke about an amazing crossroads in food production. He expressed the need to go beyond organic in growing healthy foods. The other road is the Round Up-ready crops, which have already created super weeds that will require tons more herbicidal applications, especially due to the approval of a new round of GMO crops by the USDA.
There are more than 350,000 members of the Center for Food Safety. As awareness of the harm done by GMO foods in the diets of Americans grows, more people are looking to join the movement to demand safer foods and the labeling of GMO ingredients in the foods they eat today.
There are several organizations that understand the dangers of GMOs and the rights of the public to know. Through the GMO Summit, over the next three days, people can learn more about these organizations and how they have helped keep people the world over safe from the hijacking of the food system.
Still to speak this morning are Dr. Vandana Shiva and Robyn O'Brien. Go to gmosummit.org to sign in to the summit. The summit is completely free and will arm people with knowledge to keep themselves and their families healthy by avoiding GMOs. People can and do put pressure on Congress to act as the people will, not as big business wills.
