WOODSIDE, Calif. -- Well-loved Shirley Temple, the child star with her dimples and curly hair, who danced, sang, grinned and sobbed her way into our hearts and who cheered-up Depression-era movie goers, has died.

She was 85.

Temple's publicist, Cheryl Kagan, says she died on Monday night at 11pm.

She lived near San Francisco.

At the end her family were around her, says Kagan.

"She will never be forgotten, who could ever not recognize her lovely, charming face?" says San Francisco resident, Alice Marshall. "And who could forget her singing "On the Good Ship Lollipop"?"

"We salute her for a life of remarkable achievements as an actor, as a diplomat, and most importantly as our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and adored wife for fifty-five years of the late and much missed Charles Alden Black," said a family statement.

From 1935 to 1938, says ABC 7 News in San Francisco, Shirley Temple was the top box-office attraction. The record has never been reached by any other child star.

In obtaining that record, she was up against, and won, out over such actors as Bing Crosby, Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, Robert Taylor and Joan Crawford.

It was back in 1999 that the American Film Institute ranked her as no. 18 out of 25 actresses who became known as screen legends.

ABC 7 News in San Francisco reports:
"Temple was credited with helping save 20th Century Fox from bankruptcy with films such as "Curly Top" and "The Littlest Rebel."

Shirley Temple even had a cocktail named after her. That drink is made of ginger ale and grenadine with a maraschino cherry on top. Maybe in celebration of Valentine's Day, you might try one?

It's appropriately named to highlight Temple's sweetness and innocence.

Rest in Peace, you will be sorely missed, Shirley Temple.
