Wednesday, Shirley Sherrod said that she isn’t sure she wants her USDA job back even if it was offered. Sherrod was asked to resign from the USDA after a three minute clip of a speech she gave at an NAACP meeting was given to her supervisors. The USDA announced Wednesday that they will conduct a full investigation of the situation.
Wednesday, Sherrod said that the USDA’s decision to review her case is "bittersweet," and said that she isn’t sure she wants her job back. She said that she isn’t sure what type of job it might be, and what people will think of her or how she will be treated.
The three minute clip was part of a much longer speech in which she tells the story of how she learned to treat people equally, and about a time when she didn’t. She goes on to tell the story of a “white farmer” that she didn’t help based on the farmer’s race.
"When I made that commitment (at age 17 years old to remain in Georgia and help people), I was making that commitment to black people, and to black people only," Sherrod said in the speech. "But you know, God will ... put things in your path so that you realize that the struggle was really about poor people."
The words that Sherrod used that eventually led to the loss of her job were:
"[The white farmer] was trying to show me he was superior to me," she said, talking about that day that happened 24 years ago. "I knew what he was doing, but he had to come to me for help."
