Thursday, the White House announced and publicly apologized to Shirley Sherrod for firing her without conducting a full investigation of the details of her NAACP “racist” speech she gave in March; Sherrod has been offered her USDA job back, but Sherrod isn’t sure she wants it. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs seemed eager to put the situation behind them.
Thursday morning, Sherrod appeared on Good Morning America and expressed doubts about how she was asked to resign from her job and why. She also said that she would love to speak to the President about the situation. Sherrod accepted the apology, but expressed concerns that she may not be treated the same way if she returned to work. She also said that she wants to be sure that the USDA is committed to stopping racism.
Sherrod said that she has been offered a different job at the USDA which is an outreach position that would deal with discrimination matters. She said she is excited about being the person that others would go to about those issues.
"I would not want to be that individual that the department and everyone is looking to solve the issue of racism at USDA. It takes a lot more to get that job done," she said. "I haven't seen the offer. ... Before I say no totally, I would like to look at that."
When asked by ABC News if she thought President Obama "fully" supported her, she said she is not sure of that, but would welcome the opportunity to speak to him about what happened. She said that Obama is "not someone who has experienced some of the things I've experienced in life."
