Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects millions of children. It includes a combination of the following: difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity, or impulsive behavior. The initial diagnosis is either inattention or hyperactive/impulsive behavior. Boys are more frequently diagnosed according to the Mayo Clinic Health website because they typically display hyperactivity while girls are undiagnosed because they display inattention, which is not as overt. Secondary symptoms are low self-esteem, troubled relationships, and poor performance in school. Shire, a global specialty biopharmaceutical company offers an ADHD Scholarship for high school students in the United States with ADHD. It provides monies for them to pursue college, vocational school, or technical school.
This is an excellent opportunity for 50 students to receive $2,000 and a prepaid year of ADHD coaching services from Edge Foundation, a Seattle-based company (www.edgefoundation.org). The coaching services provide students diagnosed with ADHD with the necessary external supports to assist them with organization skills, academic assistance, and psychological support. Exemplary coaches specifically trained to work with individuals diagnosed with ADHD facilitate the coaching services. The foundation provides weekly sessions where each student creates weekly individualized goals in conjunction with ongoing email and phone support. Various reports believe that students with ADHD can be more successful with additional planning and supports like the ones at Edge Foundation.
Michael Yasick, Senior Vice President of Shire’s ADHD business believes, “There are thousands of high school seniors, college students, and adults going on to higher education who suffer from ADHD. We want to recognize the brave individuals who work hard to overcome the challenges of this life-altering condition, and help them continue their educational pursuits.”
Encourage the high school students in Philadelphia School District and the surrounding counties to take advantage of this amazing opportunity, which is open to students nationally. Shire is providing a holistic package that includes funding and a year-long coaching service for each of the scholarship recipients. They are dedicated to the successful collegial or vocational/technical completion for each of the 50 students that receive this opportunity.
The deadline for the scholarship is March 30, 2010. Additional information, eligibility requirements, and applications are located at www.ShireADHDScholarship.com. The winners will be announced June 12, 1012.
