While a trip to Shipshewana is a little far for a day trip from Indianapolis, it does make for a great two day jaunt into the land of the Amish in north east Indiana. Shipshewana is in LaGrange County, about a three hour drive from Indy.
In the center of this small community we found what seemed to be the destination of the majority of the pedestrian traffic. The Blue Gate Restaurant and Bakery is in an attractive multi-story building with pretty landscaping, fish ponds and quaint country style decorations.
We got to the restaurant just as the breakfast buffet was closing. The hostess directed us to the lunch room. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. My husband could not decide what to order. The waitress offered to put together a combination plate with the very items that hubby wanted to eat. He ended up with a sampler of all of the different meats, mashed potatoes and corn as well as a bowl of chicken and noodles.
I had the loaded baked potato smothered in steamed veggies and cheese. Loaves of fresh baked bread are provided with your meal. We went through two loaves during our meal.
The service was excellent and the cost was very reasonable. I would highly recommend the Blue Gate. Be sure to visit the Bakery in the dame building. We came back later and purchased some goodies for a late night snack. Check out the Blue Gate Restaurant website for details.
