Craig Henneberry moved to San Diego last September to pursue the bodybuilding lifestyle to its fullest, and he is already fulfilling his dream. At 24, Craig is already a seasoned veteran of more than 4 years on the bodybuilding stage. He recently placed second in the open lightweight class of the INBF Norcal Classic in June. His next competition will be closer to home at the upcoming INBF Southern California Classic – a pro qualifier – on July 10 in La Jolla.
A native of Scarsdale, New York, Craig graduated from Scarsdale High School where he received an academic scholarship at State University of New York Maritime College majoring in Marine Engineering and earning his Merchant Marine’s License. He is now completing his MBA at UMASS Amherst while working at General Dynamics NASSCO building auxiliary and support ships for the U.S. Navy and oil tankers and dry cargo carriers for the commercial market.
Craig’s rugged-looking physique can be attributed, at least in part, to his many years of martial arts training – he started when he was just 10 – which, together with some serious weight training, have made him a threat to win every time he steps on stage. “Every contest has been memorable,” he says passionately. “I look forward to learning new things with every competition.”
California has already proven to be more conducive to bodybuilding for Craig, and his family back in Scarsdale shares his dream of earning a WNBF pro card to compete as a professional bodybuilder. He trains at World Gym in San Diego, and his girlfriend Laura, herself a rising figure competitor, knows the ropes well enough to provide him with support on the home front. And, let’s not forget “Pisser” – his pet rabbit – who lends him an ear (or two) whenever he needs someone to listen to him.
As for competing drug-free, Craig wouldn’t have it any other way. “Staying free from any coercion and influence directly reflects what I am capable of on my own. Staying natural and competing naturally is a level of competition that is unrivaled,” he says unequivocally.
After the Southern California Classic, Craig will be heading for the INBF West Coast Classic - another WNBF pro qualifier - on September 25 in Sacramento. After all, that’s why he came to California in the first place.
