Sherwin Williams & Pantone reveal shades of purple for 2014 colors of the year

Sherwin-Williams has announced its color of the year is Exclusive Plum (SW 6263) described as a versatile color that can be used in a variety of spaces. For a cozy, masculine den, Jackie Jordan, Director of Color Marketing at Sherwin-Williams recommends pairing Exclusive Plum with accents of copper and well-worn leather. Exclusive Plum can also be layered with gold, gray and white for an elegant, dreamy bedroom, or highlighted against white subway tile and chrome fixtures for a statement master bathroom. Pops of magenta and chartreuse can liven up Exclusive Plum for a more energetic space and when paired with creamy whites or other neutrals, the mellow yet purposeful purple can turn any space into a refreshing retreat.

“This dusky, filtered violet is refined without being stuffy, elegant yet easy, and layered with romantic potential. It has an amazing quality and can be adapted for nearly any space, whether used as an accent or for an entire room,” says Jordan. Each year, Jordan, along with other Sherwin-Williams color experts, researches color influences from around the world to determine the annual color forecast and the Color of the Year. For a first look at her suggestions about how to use Exclusive Plum and the other color palettes for 2014, watch this video “2014 Color Trend Sneak Peek “narrated by Jordan. The Color Forecast 2014 is comprised of 38 colors that are grouped into four palettes: Reasoned, Diaphanous, Intrinsic and Curiosity, the group in which Exclusive Plum is applied.

Another hue of purple, PANTONE® 18-3224 Radiant Orchid, described as a captivating, magical, enigmatic purple, has been selected by Pantone for 2014 Color of the Year. According to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®, Radiant Orchid reaches across the color wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination. She explains that Radiant Orchid is an invitation to innovation and encourages expanded creativity and originality. It is an enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, which inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health.

Jazz up interior spaces by adding touches of this eye-catching hue in paint, accent pieces and accessories. As adaptable as it is beautiful, Radiant Orchid complements olive and deeper hunter greens, and offers a gorgeous combination when paired with turquoise, teal and even light yellows. This vibrant color can liven up neutral interior spaces that included gray, beige and taupe. It can be bold and energizing without being overpowering.
